Elements of Glass 2: A 5-Week Materials Study Workshop (5-day)
Having trouble signing up online? Call the studio at 513-321-0206 to reserve a spot!
This five-week fused glass series is designed for curious makers who want to explore a wide range of glass materials, techniques, and creative approaches. Through four distinct projects and guided material studies, we’ll work our way through sheet glass, rods, frit, and stringer while students gain a deeper understanding of how glass behaves in the kiln and how color, layering, and form work together. Elements of Glass 2 introduces students to 3 new cold working methods, Tile saw, flat lap grinder, and sandblaster. Elements of Glass 1 is not a prerequisite and any new students may register for Elements of Glass 2.
- Week 1: Pattern Bar day 1
We'll start with a brief discussion of color theory, glass composition and color selections then students will choose sheet glass colors to layer into a box dam to create intricate patterns with a "flow" bar technique in the kiln fire.
- Week 2: Pattern Bar day 2
Student will return on week two and set up at the tile saw to slice open their pattern bars revealing swirling patterns with movement and dimension. Then we will arrange the slices to begin assembling the platters to be ready for the next kiln fire.
- Week 3: Radiant Patterns (Set of 2)
Student will return on week two and set up at the tile saw to slice open their pattern bars revealing swirling patterns with movement and dimension. Then we will arrange the slices to begin assembling the platters to be ready for the next kiln fire.
- Week 4: Draped Line Vessel
During week 4, students will work with delicate glass stringer to create standing draped vessel by layering transparent and opaque colorful glass lines. Students will also continue working on their Radiant Patterns pieces and cold work both the Radiant Patterns and Pattern Bar projects so they are ready to be slumped.
- Week 5: Dot Beads
During week 5 we are headed to the torches to cover the basics of making perfectly round beads with dots! Students will work with opaque and transparent rods and learn how to confidently work at the flame working stations.
Across all five weeks, the instructor will cover:
- How glass is made and colored
- Basic color theory and color interaction in glass
- Material compatibility and kiln processes
-
Tools and equipment
