Elements of Glass 1 - Guided Workshop (5-day)

This five-week fused glass series is designed for curious makers who want to explore a wide range of glass materials, techniques, and creative approaches. Through four distinct projects and guided material studies, we’ll work our way through sheet glass, rods, frit, and stringer while students gain a deeper understanding of how glass behaves in the kiln and how color, layering, and form work together.

• Week 1: Jewel Tone Square on Square Platter 
  We begin with a vibrant platter project using transparent jewel-tone sheet glass layered with clear glass. Students will explore stacking, layering, and thickness to see how color saturation shifts and deepens in the kiln. This project introduces cutting, composition, and the visual magic of transparent glass.
• Week 2: Torch to Kiln Floral Bowls (set of 2)
  In this hybrid technique class, students will create elements of flowers making petals, stems, and leaves using a torch. These elements will then be arranged and fused onto two pre-fired glass bases (that students will make in week one) before being slumped into bowl molds. This project bridges flameworking and kiln work, demonstrating how flame worked components can be successfully fused and formed.
• Week 3: Frit Illustration (set of 2)
  Starting with a printed color image template placed beneath clear glass, students will “paint” with fine frit, carefully matching colors to the image. Similar to a paint-by-number process (without numbers), this project focuses on precision, color placement, and building imagery using fine and powdered glass frit. We’ll start week 4 finishing this project with additional powdered glass to add dimension.
• Week 4: Warp + Weft: Glass Platter (day 1)
  Inspired by layered and interwoven glass styles, this project uses glass stringers and frit, to build a rich textured surface with depth and movement. Students will explore color theory, pattern and transparency to create a visually complex fused glass piece.
• Week 5: Finishing, Review & Material Study
  The final week starts with completing the Warp + Weft Platter. Then we will bring everything together with finishing discussions, project review, and deeper material exploration. Throughout the series, students will study and work with sheet glass, rods, frit, and stringers, learning how each behaves in the kiln and how to use them intentionally.
